Object-Based Learning in Higher Education

Object-Based Learning in Higher Education

CAPE in collaboration with the Museum of Domestic Design and Architecture (MoDA) presents a workshop on Object-Based Learning (OBL) and teaching in Higher Education.

Brief Outline:

Recent research has highlighted the benefits and advantages of utilising object based learning (OBL) within higher education teaching (Chatterjee and Hannon, Engaging the Senses, 2015). Linked to pedagogies of active and experiential learning, OBL has been shown to develop the long-term retention of ideas, and to be key to personal meaning-making. This workshop aims to provide an introduction to the benefits of OBL across all subject areas: from art and design, creative writing, filmmaking and animation to housing, creative entrepreneurship, and social policy.

The workshop will be led by expert staff from MoDA: Zoe Hendon, Head of Collections, and Dr Serena Dyer, Curator. This session will draw upon objects from within MoDA's collections, and participants will have the opportunity to engage first hand with OBL.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the session, participants will have considered:

  • Ways to embed OBL into the curriculum, in particular its relevance to the design of an inclusive curriculum.
  • How to assess student OBL and how it relates to traditional assessment methods.
  • Potential benefits and barriers to OBL, and the relationship with inclusivity and diversity.
  • Connections between OBL and creative and professional practice.
  • The wider employability and transferable skills acquired through OBL.

Preparation:
There are no requirements, but it will be useful, if you have familiarised with this topic in advance by: reading a couple of pages from the introductory parts of any of the written sources below; and/or by browsing MoDA’s online resources and watching any of the videos on its YouTube site.
