Writing Your Impact

Writing Your Impact In-Person

Duration

3 hours

Brief Outline

To provide researchers with the necessary tools to write successful bids and impact statements, and promote their research internally and externally.

Intended Outcomes

By the end of the workshop delegates will be able to

  • Identify and clearly articulate the criteria used to assess impact by HEFCE, UK Research Councils, Horizon 2020, Trusts and Foundations
  • Locate and use internal and external resources in the development of impact materials
  • Write an impact statement that is clear, efficient, effectively structured, and free from technical jargon

Target Audience

Academic staff who are currently preparing or planning to prepare bids or assessment submissions that require impact statements; academic and administrative staff interested in better promoting their research and its community benefits.

Training Methods

  • Pathways to Impact and Horizon 2020: analyse and evaluate successful statements; co-create a statement for each framework from sample research
  • Stating the rationale: workshop session in which delegates use their own or sample research to describe the principles and limits underpinning the self-evaluation and subsequent articulation of impact
  • Writing past impact: develop strategies for viewing impact as a continuous process; collating evidence of impact; retrospective evaluation of impact and paying impact forward in either own work or that of others
  • Celebrating impact: identify avenues for research impact, dissemination and engagement outside of formal assessment frameworks; reach internal and external audiences; use teams and resources at Middlesex to maximise the reach of your research.
