PART A: Background for effective conversations about mental health Online

Background

We all have mental health, just as we all have physical health. Both can fluctuate and change over time, and mental ill health can significantly impact on our work and personal lives. By directly addressing misunderstandings and stigma around mental health, we can work towards breaking the taboo and cultivating a more open, supportive and inclusive workplace.

The Inclusion and Wellbeing team have organised a series of online mental health training sessions, which will provide a safe space for colleagues to ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of this important topic.

Target Audience

This session is open to all staff.

Course Aims

This is an interactive, in-depth training session, aimed at deepening your understanding of mental health and equipping you with the confidence and practical skills to be able to have supportive conversations with those who may be struggling with their mental health. It is based on the principles of mental health first aid.

This session will help you to re-conceptualise and understand the dynamic and individual nature of mental health and will teach you how to talk about it in a non-stigmatising way. It will help you to spot the early signs that someone may be struggling so that you can step in early to offer support.

Course Content

The session will cover topics including:

  • Defining Mental Health
  • Mental Health Continuum
  • Language and Stigma
  • Stress & Mental Health
  • Coping Strategies - healthy and unhealthy
  • Signs of Distress.

Location

Virtual via Zoom.
