Supervising Practice In-Person / Online

What specific supervisory support needs do students who research in and through professional practices have? What are models of good practice in supervising practice research? What obstacles do students and supervisors encounter? In this session we will explore challenges as well as share best approaches to supervising practice research.

This session is designed for current supervisors who are, or wish to become, PGR internal examiners. It is a delicate role, balancing knowledge of programme standards, an institutional perspective and support for the candidate, both in the report and during the viva voce. The session aims to bring together perspectives from different disciplines and the practice of the role.

Key topics:

  • Practice research in various contexts and their support needs

  • Alternative approaches to supervision

  • Studio-based or work-based practice supervision
