Session overview:
Generative AI (GenAI) tools are increasingly influencing research and teaching practices across UK Higher Education. For early career educators, understanding both the potential and the risks of these technologies is essential for supporting students and developing professional practice.
This interactive 90-minute staff development workshop will provide a structured introduction to GenAI in the research context. Participants will:
- Examine opportunities for integrating GenAI into research practices at undergraduate, postgraduate taught, and doctoral levels.
- Explore sector-relevant challenges including academic integrity, copyright and intellectual property, GDPR and data protection, bias, and reproducibility.
- Consider how to model responsible use for students and colleagues in different disciplinary contexts.
Outcomes: By the end of the session, participants will have a clear understanding of how GenAI is currently being applied in UK HE, be aware of the associated risks, and take away practical strategies and resources to support safe, professional, and ethical use in their own teaching and research supervision.
